Ludwig von Bertalanffy Forerunner of Evolutionary Systems Theory

چکیده
Ludwig von Bertalanffy is known as founding father of the General System Theory (GST). When Ludwig von Bertalanffy created his GST amidst the last century, he was able to overcome the deep cleft between the controversial theoretical approaches to biology – mechanicism and vitalism. He did so by formulating laws of organisation ruling biota and after generalising them he successfully applied them to different domains such as medicine, psychology, psychotherapy. Methodologically, Bertalanffy revived synthesis, ontologically, he advocated perspectivism, and, ethically, he was humanist. His main concern was the fate of the human civilisation and the new way of thinking necessary for the survival of mankind. Evolutionary systems theory thus is the most recent elaboration of Bertalanffy’s original GST-ideas. “Unity through diversity” is the motto that holds for evolutionary systems theory, too – epistemologically, ontologically, and ethically, if it takes advantage of categories of dialectical philosophy already existing in philosophia perennia and modifies them to suit the modern findings.

Systems, Structural Properties, and Levels of Organisation: the Influence of Ludwig Von Bertalanffy on the Work of F.a. Hayek
This paper examines the influence exerted on the thought of F.A. Hayek by the work of the biologist and founder of systems theory, Ludwig von Bertalanffy. It is argued first of all that Bertalanffy provided Hayek with a conceptual framework in terms of which he could articulate the philosophical significance of his theoretical psychology. In particular, Bertalanffy’s work afforded Hayek a set o...

The world we live in is a complex system composed of subsystems that interact among each other with each having clearly defined boundaries and coherent dynamics. Systems theory was developed by biologist Ludwig von Bertalanffy in the 1930s to simplify world complexity to human mind and make it more understandable (von Bertalanffy, 1962). The development of the theory came as a result of the aut...

متن کاملLudwig von Bertalanffy's Organismic View on the Theory of Evolution
Ludwig von Bertalanffy was a key figure in the advancement of theoretical biology. His early considerations already led him to recognize the necessity of considering the organism as a system, as an organization of parts and processes. He termed the resulting research program organismic biology, which he extended to all basic questions of biology and almost all areas of biology, hence also to th...

'Biology is an 'unrestricted' science ... and its phenomena are of a complexity which has severely tested scientific method. Biologists, in fact, have been among the pioneers in establishing ways of thinking in terms of wholes, and it was a biologist, Ludwig von Bertalanffy, who suggested generalising this thinking to refer to any kind of whole, not simply to biological systems.' (Checkland, 19...
